This was a very personal project about grief and friendship and my first (and probably only) time directing while also being in front of the camera. Lia Kuri and I met over three years ago at a Lunar New Year Rave and quickly realized how many strange parallels we shared. Both Americans turned Montrealers, same age, same University, going through a breakup, mixed race and having Asian dads who also happened to be really sick. This kicked off a close friendship over the last couple of years both personally and professionally. Unfortunately, both of our dad’s passed this year, mine in January and Lia’s in July.
As the album explores grief, caretaking, and becoming your parent’s parent, we imagined becoming our fathers for a day and bringing them back through their clothes, mannerisms, and hobbies. Throughout the video, our dad characters become mixed up with the real Lia and Hayley, a reflection of how they continue to live on through us.
